Meutia Farida Hatta Swasono is a Professor of Anthropology at University of Indonesia, and also a guest lecturer in other universities. She was a Deputy for Cultural Reservation and Development at the Ministry for Culture and Tourism (Dec. 2003 - Oct. 2004) before becoming a member of the Cabinet of President Bambang Yudhoyono as the Minister for Women Empowerment (Oct. 2004).
Meutia Hatta is known for her articles of the anthropological approach on health, especially on maternal and infant health. Her writings have been published in many journals. She also involves in scientific researches on cultural differences throughout Indonesia, particularly on the cultural aspect of health behavior of many communities. She also writes many articles on the development of national culture and national integration. She has been invited to speak in scientific forums and workshops, nationally and internationally, to share her knowledge and experiences.
During her leadership as Minister for Women Empowerment of Republic of Indonesia, a prominent law to protect women migrant workers, Law No 21/2007 on Anti Trafficking in Person, has been enacted.
When time permits, she likes to do photography and has done some publications on her photographs. She also likes to develop social contacts with people around Indonesia to learn about their culture.
