In October 2001, Dame Veronica Sutherland became President of Lucy Cavendish College, following a career in the British Diplomatic Service from 1965-99.
Following her first posting to Copenhagen from 1967-70, much of Dame Veronica's overseas career has been concerned with the developing world and with North-South issues. She ran Britain's largest bilateral aid programme to India (1975-78) and served as UK Permanent Delegate to UNESCO (1981-83). She was HM Ambassador to the Cote d'Ivoire, Niger and Burkina Faso (1987-90), during which time her husband, Alex, was the UK Executive Director at the African Development Bank. Whilst at the Commonwealth Secretariat (1999-2001), Dame Veronica had significant roles in the areas of international debt and the problems of small states.
Dame Veronica sees the post of HM Ambassador to Dublin as the culmination of her diplomatic career, during which she gave particular emphasis to the normalization of UK-Ireland relations and the development of links between universities, schools, cultural bodies and non-Government Organisations. Her contribution was recognized not only by the British Government but by the Irish authorities too, illustrated by the award of an Honorary Doctorate in Law by Trinity College, Dublin.
During her time at Lucy Cavendish College, she has been particularly concerned with access issues, the needs of mature students and the particular problems which face the newer, smaller colleges in the University of Cambridge. More widely, and through her membership of the University Council, she has supported efforts to strengthen the relationship between the three constituent parts of the University: the Colleges, the Faculties and the Old Schools.
