 Moon-soon Choi started his journalism career in 1984 at MBC (Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation) and has taken various jobs within the news and
sports divisions in MBC before he became the 27th President of the nation¡¯s leading
public broadcaster in 2005.
With in-depth knowledge of the Korean broadcasting industry and
hands-on experience as a former director of news programming, Mr. Choi has
brought about fresh insights into the organization as a new leader.
He
launched a global business unit to strengthen MBC's worldwide sales network,
establishing offices in China and Japan both in 2005, and providing a 24-hour
broadcasting service through MBC America¡¯s DirecTV Premium Channel across the
United States from 2007.
MBC¡¯s popular TV series such as "Jewel in the Palace"
and "The Prince of the Legend (Ju Mong)" set an ever-high viewing rate in Korea
and were sold at a record high price overseas, paving the way for Korean films
and other entertainments to maintain strength.
Before his current post, he
was Chairman of both the MBC Labor Union and the National Union of Media
Workers. As Chairman of Korean Broadcasters Association in 2006, he pioneered in
efforts to build up the base for digital broadcasting and help promote the
development of TV contents through government deregulations. He also contributed
to create Seoul Drama Awards, which is designed to bring spotlight to the finest
dramas among various media contents and to introduce them to the public.
Mr. Choi has taken a huge interest in women's issues, and has focused
on creating a wide range of programs and campaigns aimed at empowering women
in Korea and abroad through MBC's yearlong campaign, "Woman Power - The
Future of Korea."
Mr. Choi
holds a bachelor's degree in English Literature from Gwangwon University, and a
master's degree in English Literature from Seoul National University. Born in
1956, he is married with two daughters.
